Job description
This role supports the delivery of the IT Accommodation Programme, collaborating closely with:
- The Defra Estates Programme to deliver IT requirements for office refurbishments and relocations
- Local Facilities teams on locally funded refurbishments and moves
- Business-as-Usual (BAU) technical teams to help resolve IT issues across sites
Due to operational requirements, this post is based from any suitable Defra office in the North, covering parts of the Midlands and Wales, North West, Yorkshire, North East and Scotland. The post holder will be expected to travel and work anywhere within the UK.Work will be assigned by the Domain Lead (Programme Manager) or an IT Accommodation Senior Project Manager (SPM), in consultation with the post holder. Once assigned, the role provides a significant degree of autonomy to deliver outcomes in line with agreed standards.
The post holder will have technical qualifications biased towards IT infrastructure and networking, though will be expected to deal with a wide range of situations. Providing expert technical knowledge and support for the team and undertake installation work and supervision of 3rd party suppliers on site – essentially acting as the eyes and ears of the relevant IT Accommodation PM whilst on site during project implementation work. They will be expected to be actively involved in the work and will on occasion instruct supplier staff of the standard of work required.
Please be aware that the post undertakes work on site on a daily basis, so frequent travel is expected across the UK including regular overnight stays (including all week) and working out of hours including at weekends. The post holder is required to be able to lift and install equipment and have a full UK driving licence. Work can also involve being on building sites, so the post holder must be physically capable. A lease car will be made available for work purposes subject to relevant approvals.

Responsibilities
• During building work, coordinate the work of the ICT suppliers on site integrating delivery with other building (non-IT) trades on sites
• Tracking delivery and reporting on progress to the relevant DDTS IT Accommodation Project Manager
• Assuring the delivery of the ICT suppliers and ensuring a complete view of the work rather than individual silos view of the suppliers
• Attend site surveys when new work is being developed to help scope out the work and determine requirements in conjunction with the relevant IT Accommodation PM
• Identifying H&S issues within IT equipment rooms (comms room/ Distributed Server Rooms) and providing options for resolving and also implementing solutions
• When required, undertake patching work, equipment removal/ installation, comms cabinets removals/ installation, tracing phone lines and wiring on DP (Distribution Points) through the direction of the relevant Project Manager or the Service Domain Lead.
• Provide feedback to remote teams in fault investigating and fixing
• Floor walking following user moves during projects to ensure users have access to their IT services as expected and resolving any issues found
• Liaising with on-site users during IT installation work and being able to explain complex technical issues in Plain English
Skills and Experience
• Working in a Government/ Public Agency delivering IT Infrastructure installation as part of Estates/ Facilities/ Accommodation projects across offices, depots, laboratories and dealing with Contractors, Project Managers and Facilities teams on site regarding IT infrastructure installations and operational activities
• Stakeholder management – negotiating skills, influencing skills - Dealing with non-technical end users and being able to explain IT technical issues in plain English. This ranges from end users to Exec Managers, internal technical resources and external suppliers.
• Delivering and supervising the delivery of the IT in Accommodation (Estates) projects including translating Estates/ Property requirements into IT deliverables and ability to interpret architect drawings for the impact on the IT deliverables
• LAN/WAN data /voice network configuration and support including fault finding and fixing
• Structured cabling installation including patching according to patching schedules and development of patching schedules – Cat6/Cat5/Cat5e voice and data integration
• Technical solution designs including provision of technical documentation and review of technical documentation
• Provision of plans for Communications room design and cabinet layouts conforming to a LAN standard throughout an organisation
• Organising and supervising 3rd party suppliers on site including when on construction sites under CMD (Construction Management and Design) regulations and liaising with at least 8 non-IT suppliers to integrate the IT work with the wider building work
• IT Communication (Distributed Server Room) room design
• Commissioning the IT on new sites including testing ready for end users to move in
• Installation of IT equipment – LAN, WAPs, desktop IT – and testing
• Fibre and copper backbones between satellite communications rooms
• Cat5e/Cat6 structured cabling for office areas
• Cisco Core switches and access switches
• Patching for data requirements at users’ desks
• Troubleshooting technical problems either to resolve (either by themselves or in conjunction with remote engineers) or to provide solutions for later implementation
• Working on construction sites and integrating IT work schedule with building trades
• Desktop IT installation
