United Kingdom
Full Time
Senior Infrastructure Architect - Windows & VMware
Position Description
At CGI, you'll shape and deliver resilient infrastructure solutions that help our clients operate securely and effectively. As a Senior Infrastructure Architect, you'll take ownership of technical designs from concept through implementation, leading project teams and turning complex requirements into high-quality solutions across Windows Server and virtualised environments. You'll have the freedom to challenge established approaches, introduce automation and apply your expertise to solve demanding infrastructure challenges, while being supported by an experienced community of architects, consultants and engineers. Working across CGI and client environments, you'll combine hands-on technical leadership with architectural thinking to deliver solutions on time, manage risk and create lasting value for our clients.
CGI was recognised in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work List 2025 and has been named a UK 'Best Employer' by the Financial Times. We offer a competitive salary, excellent pension, private healthcare, plus a share scheme (3.5% + 3.5% matching) which makes you a CGI Partner not just an employee. We are committed to inclusivity, building a genuinely diverse community of tech talent and inspiring everyone to pursue careers in our sector, including our Armed Forces, and are proud to hold a Gold Award in recognition of our support of the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. Join us and you'll be part of an open, friendly community of experts. We'll train and support you in taking your career wherever you want it to go.
Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a hybrid position.
Your future duties and responsibilities
In this role, you will take ownership of the technical architecture and detailed design of infrastructure solutions, producing Low Level Designs and leading consultants and engineers through successful implementation. You'll assess technical feasibility, identify and mitigate risks, contribute to High Level Design reviews and ensure solutions meet CGI's security, quality and documentation standards.
You'll work with a high degree of autonomy while having the support of CGI's wider technical community. You'll bring fresh thinking to infrastructure challenges, identify opportunities to automate through technologies such as PowerShell and help ensure every solution is transitioned effectively into BAU support. The role will involve working from home, CGI offices and client locations as required, alongside occasional out-of-hours change activity.
• Architect & Design - Own and produce detailed Low Level Designs for Windows Server and virtual infrastructure solutions.
• Lead & Deliver - Provide technical leadership to consultants and engineers throughout project implementation.
• Review & Challenge - Contribute technical expertise to HLD reviews, assessing viability, product selection and best practice.
• Assess & Mitigate - Identify technical issues, dependencies and risks and define appropriate mitigation.
• Automate & Improve - Use PowerShell and, where appropriate, Ansible to improve efficiency, repeatability and consistency.
• Implement & Transition - Deliver solutions into CGI and third-party data centres and ensure effective handover into BAU.
• Document & Assure - Produce accurate technical and support documentation while maintaining CGI security, change and quality standards.
• Collaborate & Support - Work closely with project teams, clients and technical specialists to deliver high-quality outcomes and client satisfaction.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role
You'll bring significant Windows infrastructure expertise combined with strong technical architecture and project delivery experience. You should be confident owning detailed designs, leading technical implementation and communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You'll also be comfortable working independently while collaborating with specialists across CGI and client teams.
• Extensive knowledge of Windows Server architecture, including legacy and current supported versions.
• Proven ability to produce and communicate high-quality Low Level Designs (LLDs) and technical proposals.
• Strong experience with VMware and/or Hyper-V virtualisation.
• Strong PowerShell automation experience.
• Proven experience leading infrastructure changes and technical project implementations.
• Ability to identify, assess and mitigate technical risks and issues.
• Experience reviewing High Level Designs and advising on technical viability, product selection and best practice.
• Strong understanding of change control, operational handover and technical documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and provide technical leadership to consultants and engineers.
• Experience with Nutanix would be advantageous.
• Ansible for Windows experience would be advantageous.
• Cloud infrastructure experience would be beneficial.
• Microsoft AZ-800 certification would be advantageous.
• Willingness to undertake occasional out-of-hours change activity and travel to CGI offices or client sites when required.
